Guide to Buying a Pushchair

The following guide to choosing and buying a pushchair highlights some of things you'll need to consider when buying a pushchair. At first glance, it appears we are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing and buying a pushchair, stroller or buggy. You may find yourself saying 'Oh my god, I never knew choosing a pram would be so hard'! Follow our tips and we'll try to help take the hassle out of it, because buying a baby pram or pushchair is not to be taken lightly.

Buying a pushchair, stroller or buggy is not any easy decision and deserves much thought and consideration. It's not as simple as buying a magazine's 'Best Buy' or buying the same pushchair as your sister or your best friend. It depends on several factors some of which we will touch on here.

Whether you're are looking for a pram, pushchair, buggy, stroller or travel system it's worth getting familiar with the different types, chassis and models of pushchairs. For example travel systems comprise of a pushchair with a car seat that fits onto the chassis and they tend to be a practical and usually budget friendly method of buying a set of wheels. More elaborate sprung prams which were first built in the Victorian era, are a more expensive but very sturday option. However unless you opt for a pram/puschair in one  you will find a Pram will only lasted a child until they are able to sit up unaided. Just which pushchair is right for you and your baby depends on lots things including:

Budget!

Models range from a cheap, lightweight pushchair to a £2000 designer buggy with alloy wheels and a number plate. There is also a thriving market for second-hand prams and pushchairs on eBay with some famous name brand prams to choose from, some at very affordable prices.

So how much can you sensibly afford? There’s no point in looking at £599+ range if you know that this is totally unaffordable. All you will succeed in doing is either depressing yourself because you can’t afford it or give way to temptation and say goodbye to your £££s.

What’s the most that you can afford? Are you happy to shave a bit off other baby items to get the best pushchair, pram or buggy you can.

Family and friends are usually very keen to buy something for the new baby, would they be happy to contribute towards the cost of the pushchair, pram or buggy or maybe they'd be willing to assist with the cost of the nursery,  leaving you free to budget for your travel system?

Another consideration is

Your Lifestyle!

Consider the following questions before embarking upon your search for the perfect pushchair.

Where do I live? Is it Rural, Suburbia or City?

Do I live in a house or a flat? If it's a block of flats, is there a lift, If it's a house, does it have a garden?

How much space is in my house?

Do I have my own transport or do you use public transport?

Do I have any other babies, toddlers, children who require a pram or pushchair?

Are we an active or sporty family?

Do we go a lot of holidays or trips away?

Its also worth mentioning that you should check some key areas before you make your purchase, some of which will depend upon your preferred choice of pushchair.

  • Measure your door frames. If you decide to go for the large traditional Pram, its a good idea to check you can get it in the house first.

  • Measure your boot. How upset would you be to find that you cannot take junior away to granny's for the weekend because you can't get his pram in the boot. Remember pushchairs, come  in very many different shapes and sizes.

  • If you are buying a travel system check which make of car seats can be fitted in your make and model of car.

and finally

  • Don't leave buying your pushchair till the last minute as some brands of pushchairs don't have immediate delivery dates.

Happy Hunting
